How to choose a lawyer - and what to pay a lawyer

The fact of the matter is that good lawyers, who know how to fight and win, and are willing to do what it takes to get the best results - lawyers who have a proven track record of winning pretrial motions and jury trials - charge more than ordinary lawyers. This is especially true when the lawyer has a philosophy like mine: treat a drunk driving case very seriously and do everything possible to win it.

My advice to you is this: Beware the discount lawyer. You are far better off with a public defender than a discount lawyer. Get the best lawyer you can afford, not the cheapest lawyer you can find. When we talk, I'll tell you about my fees. I understand that the cost of an attorney is an expense that you weren't planning on. So I offer fees at a flat rate to assist you with your budgeting. You'll always know, in advance, what my fees will be.

Of course I accept cash or checks. But you might be interested to know that for your convenience, I'll also gladly accept payment by credit card.

In any case, the initial phone or personal consultation with me is free, so there is no risk on your part-and you will learn just what your rights and options are. When we are finished, if you're not convinced that I will be able to protect you to your complete satisfaction, then you can simply decide not to hire me. I won't trouble you again . . . and you'll owe me nothing.

Some individuals do try to defend themselves without legal assistance, but this is risky because the penalties can be harsh. Good legal representation can decrease many of these concerns. I promise you this, however: if you are one of those people who does not need a lawyer, I WILL TELL YOU SO. I have no desire or need to sell you unnecessary legal services.
